Re:Triangle Protest - 2006/11/25 14:46
I went to the protest on Sunday and thought it was a really good turnout - well done to the organisers - I especially liked the fact that at the end of the protest the mike was opened to everyone, so that everyone could have a say - more than council has allowed us to do since they revoked the right for anyone to legally object to any development. Check out the website www.savestkilda.org.au, it has only been running for a few days but they already have over 3,500 on their petition!

Julia - the simple answer is that we just don't know what's going to happen to Luna Park. Luna Park is part of this Triangle Site. There have been suggestions in the past that Cavell Street (between the Palais Theatre and Luna Park) might be closed and used for development within the Triangle Site. Lindsay Fox owns Luna Park and is involved in one of the three shortlisted development consortiums. Watch this space!! David Carruthers (organising c'ttee - Save St Kilda)

Bianca - nobody knows what's going to be built at the moment. Everything is wrapped up in confidentiality agreements and shrouded in secrecy. There's talk of underground car parking (which will probably be a good thing), a boutique hotel at the back of the Palais Theatre, the Palace Nightclub being bulldozed and turned into an entertainment complex, but probably a lot higher than the current building, some open space, but we don't know how much and a supermarket and dozens of retail shops (shopping mall??). Watch this space. We wat to see plans. We want the community to have it's say. David (Save St Kilda campaign)

I saw some people wearing some black t-shirts at the protest with the save St Kilda message on them and I thought they looked great. Can anyone tell me if they are for sale anywhere?

Triangle Protest - CoPP should be ashamed - 2006/11/30 11:36
I can't belive that we elect the council memebers and pay rates and yet they treat their constituents in this manner. Even if they don't have to show us the plans and be completely open, why don't they anyway? They are supposed to represnet our interests but, really, they are showing that they represnt their own interests. We need to take action at the next elections and get those responsible OUT of OUR council! In the meantime, we need to find a way of placing more pressure on them to do the right thing. They seem to be completely unaccountable.

The Port Phillip council has screwed up yet another major project. The St Kilda triangle was always going to be tricky, but the council decided to ad a minefield to the landscape by taking away residents rights in 2004. Now after some public outcry the City of Port Phillip has asked the remaining bidders to resubmit their bids, causing other bidders to demand the same rights, possibly in a court of law. A former Mayor is being sued for defamatory and inflamatory remarks to a protestor regarding the triangle, and the current tenants have evidence that their lease may not in fact be over. What a mess. I might suggest that the State government step in and take over, but they are currently in court with the current tenants of the triangle regarding the lease. Another fine mess we all have to pay for. All this could have been avoided if the triangle issue was not shrouded in secrecy and deceit. I warned the Deputy Premier and the City of Port Phillip in 2004 that the lease issue would bite him on the backside if they didn't address it then. I guess they knew better. I now hope that the council step away from this issue as they are not capable of acting independently and without mouthing off at people who disagree with them.
