Neil Watkins has wanked more than is healthy, allegedly. One of Ireland’s most exciting artists and incendiary performers, Neil is a force of nature, a maverick, a 33-year old homosexual with a Jesus complex. On orders from heaven, this is Neil’s journey through the wilderness of queerness; from Catholic Ireland to the cruising bars of the world, from suburban ‘Head Shops’ to native American ceremonies.
Named as Queer Notions 2010 Festival Highlight by The Irish Times, and with a recent sold-out, critically acclaimed outing in the Dublin Fringe Festival, this is a brave and heartbreaking exploration of porn addiction, destructive sexual behaviour, Catholic guilt and family heartbreak. Written in hypnotic verse, it is both a profound personal journey and a furious state of the nation address.
A THISISPOPBABY commission, with support from Project Arts Centre and Cork Midsummer Festival.
“Truthful, heartfelt and immediately identifiable… astonishingly brave.” The Irish Times
"THISISPOPBABY are redefining theatre for people left cold by traditional drama" The Ticket
"Both caustic and considered, a seething personal autobiography which is transformed into a more capacious metaphor for disaffection and regeneration."
Irish Theatre Magazine
Irish Theatre Magazine
"[THISISPOPBABY are] not so much cutting edge, as creators of a whole new edge in itself" The Sunday Tribune
"Sometimes performances come along that break new ground and push into unchartered territory...this play needed to be staged" The Journal.ie
THISISPOPBABY is an Irish theatre and events production company that rips up the space between popular culture, counter culture, queer culture and high art. Nearly five years old, the multi-award winning company - led by Jennifer Jennings and Phillip McMahon - has produced 10 sold out shows; a hugely successful alternative space at Europe's Best Festival, The Electric Picnic Music Festival (2008-2010); Ireland's queer arts and ideas festival, Queer Notions; and made history in 2010 with the performance art club experience - WERK - in the Abbey Theatre, Ireland's National Theatre (Best Night Out 2010, The Sunday Times).
