Since its triumphant West End premiere in 1986, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s version of The Phantom of the Opera continues to be, arguably, the world’s most enduring and popular piece of musical theatre. Spectacularly staged, lavishly costumed, plush, sensuous, melodramatic and genuinely dramatic, Webber’s Phantom is his magnum opus. Building on the many retellings of an original French story written in 1910 by popular Parisian novelist Gaston Leroux, the story unfolds against the evocative setting of the Palais Garnier, the Paris Opera House, whose subterranean labyrinths and lake were the legendary home of Erik, the Opera Ghost. A crazed musical genius with distorted facial features, the masked Phantom terrorises performers and audiences, using his exotic, supernatural tricks to extort money and to promote his protégée as well as his own musical compositions. The love triangle between beautiful, young opera singer, Christine Daaé, Raoul the Vicomte de Chagny and the Phantom himself drives the plot to its spine‑tingling ending. The Phantom of the Opera has held audiences in its thrall for decades, as a novel, as a play, as numerous movie versions and, of course, as the spectacular Webber musical to be proudly presented by CLOC in the first non-professional production in the world of this legendary masterpiece.
