Happy Birthday to ya!
The Southside Handmade & Vintage Market turns one this month! The brain child of local accessories designers Anne Freeman of Pleasure, Little Treasure (www.pleasurelittletreasure.com) and Fin MacDonald of Jack’s Calling (www.facebook.com/Jackscalling) this slick and sophisticated market held monthly at St Kilda’s beautiful art-deco RSL Club on Acland Street had rather more humble beginnings. Anne reminisces “Our first market was in the tiny function room of a St Kilda hotel, we didn’t even charge stall hire then as we were just starting out and had lots to learn. We really made an effort to engage with our stallholders though, to learn from them and listen to their words of wisdom and encouragement.”
Since then the market has gone from strength to strength gaining attention from newspapers, online magazines, bloggers and discerning Melbourne market-goers alike.
The girls are very excited to have some of the original stallholders from their very first market at this month’s event. Noddy Vintage Clothing (www.facebook.com/noddy.vintage.clothing) will be bringing a gorgeous hand-picked collection of Mad-Men inspired clothing while The Professor’s Daughter (www.theprofessorsdaughter.com) will showcase the latest ready-to-wear collection of “vintage-vacation” inspired work and evening wear.
Steam-punk jewellery label Run Wild Horses (www.runwildhorses.com.au) will also be taking part in the birthday festivities as well as Jess Tichonczuk who has never missed a single Southside Market with her playfully Gothic jewellery label Black Diamond Accessories (www.facebook.com/Black.Diamond.Accessories).
Add to this some celebratory cupcakes from Buttercup Bakeshoppe (www.facebook.com/ButtercupBakeshoppe) and deliciously delicate Peek! (www.facebook.com/peek.sweets) macarons and you’ve got yourself a hell of a birthday bash!
